Based on data and advice from expert educators, Reading Eggs – Learn to Read has the tools and activities that will catch your child’s attention and keep them coming back for more, so they practice everyday and learn to read, faster.
With curriculum for kids aged 3 to 13, there is something for everyone. The app is great to new readers as well as those who are struggling at an older age. WIth 120 lessons that teach and allow kids to work on various skills, it’s easy to see how Reading Eggs so easily gets kids to want to read. Lessons include interactive animations, entertaining games and catchy songs. At its core, Reading Eggs bases its curriculum around skills and strategies, so kids take away abilities that they will use for a lifetime, no matter what they are reading.
Organized sequentially, the app builds each lesson on what was learned in the previous lesson, with the exception of the very first lesson, of course. So, it’s extremely important that kids follow this sequence to get the most out of the program. The app itself is divided into five areas:
- Phonemic Awareness and Phonics – recognizing letters and the sounds they make.
- Sight Words – most of what we read is by recognition of the word, rather than actually sounding out letters to read each word. This is an essential skill.
- Vocabulary – kids should know the meaning of what they are reading.
- Fluency – practice on moving through words and sequencing them together.
- Comprehension – learning to read the words is one thing. Does the child know what message was just conveyed through what they just read?
These five areas are taught throughout 120 reading lessons categorized into three phases:
- Starting Out – this is for the beginner who has never read before or who needs a fresh start. Lessons 1 through 40 reside here.
- Beginning to Read – for the emerging reader. Lessons 41 through 80.
- Early Readers – more practice to help solidify what’s been learned. Lessons 81 through 120.
In addition to this lesson program, Reading Eggs has additional reading lessons in the form of book, a learn to spell program and a test that helps you assess your child’s reading skills, phonetic skills, knowledge of sight words and understanding of vocabulary.
The songs and sounds provided by the app keep kids engaged and assist with learning without them even knowing it. The activities are so varied that there is no way they will find this app boring.
With a number of different subscription levels, parents and educators can find the level that’s right for them, so the can target a program for their child or student and not pay for more than what they want.
It would be a nice addition to the app if you could download or product some kind of report to see how well your child is progressing or even to pinpoint areas of concern so you can add more lessons to provide extra practice in those areas.
Until then, this app is feature filled and very effective if you are looking for a reading app that appeals to children of any age and one that grows with them.
